Health care reform needed

3 min read

To the editor:

I believe that health care reform should be regulated by the government.

Yes, there are costs, but the benefit to every American far outweighs the critic’s charges. I for one have not heard a legitimate opposing view. How can we turn away from human pain, much less put a price tag on it? (In America)

I dare say the opponents to the reform have seldom experienced the injustice of the Health Insurance machine.

I will acknowledge the criticism for the 1200 or so page proposed bill. So what? I don’t care what the logistics are. That’s why we have legislators, let them read and decipher it. That is their job! I don’t care how it’s done; find a way to do it.

It is analogous in my opinion of a local government installing a traffic light. I don’t care what goes into timing the light and positioning it at the intersection and to account for sunlight blindness etcetera etcetera… All I want to know is if we don’t install a traffic light at this intersection, are people are going to get hurt? That’s all I need to know. Yes it costs money, and yes it may be annoying to stop at another light and experience the delays, but the greater good for the community far outweighs my personal (yes personal) inconveniences and costs.

I am also tired of the notion that government bureaucrats are going to control your healthcare. Is a corporate accountant more qualified? Call them what you will, medical evaluator, claims facilitator, medical adjudication board, but they are employed to minimize expenditures to the “for profit” corporation. If they freely allow claims and procedures, the profit generating machine slows down and they may indeed lose their livelihood if the numbers aren’t performing.

Keeping health care solely in the private sector is unconscionable. It is gaining profit for human pain. Certain institutions should not be a profit generating machine; they should remain a governmental function.

Take for instance the military, how would it be if it was privatized? Remember hiring mercenaries in securing our war zone? No accountability, innocent people as well as our military wound up being hurt while millions of dollars was shelled out for the mercenary company to make a huge profit. How about the defense contractor Halliburton charging the military $7 for a can soda? No, we won’t go there.

Certain institutions should be government controlled.

Closer to home and on the local level: Take for instance your fire department, should that be outsourced and become privatized? Do you think there may be more fires sprouting up for the company to justify making a profit?

Stop the nonsense and support health care reform.
