Veterans Bridge speed trap
To the editor:
Today I received a speeding ticket at the toll booth on Veterans Bridge going into Fort Myers. There were others along with me waiting for their turn to fund the city shortfalls. Obeying the law is important but to place three different speed limits within a few hundred yards of each other is not only a setup for drivers but also dangerous. After receiving my ticket I drove along and practiced the three speeds within that short distance and came to the realization that it can only do one thing besides draw money ,and that is to create dangerous situations and accidents. Anyone who has crossed this bridge during high traffic times will understand that 80-90 percent driving, are over the 25 mile an hour limit some by 10 or 20 or more. If people were to go from 40-45 immediately to 25 while jockeying for better lanes it would fill the hospital emergency rooms.
Also, the method the police have to use for their own safety is targeting drivers who use the right hand lane. Right before I was flagged over multiple cars in the left two lanes blew past me with complete immunity.
It seems the intelligent alternative would be to change the 40 mph between Del Prado and the booths and the 100-yard section of 25 mph before the bridge to 35 mph. Then, once on the bridge, it could become 50 or 55.
This would almost certainly cause less confusion, less accidents, less tickets and less money out of taxpayer pockets.
Oh my, for a moment I forgot I live in Cape Coral.
