Fly the flag properly

1 min read

To the editor:

Having driven around town on Memorial Day, I feel compelled to offer the proper protocol on how to display the flag on Memorial Day,

Memorial Day is one of the designated days that the flag flies at half staff. The others are Peace Officer’s Memorial Day May 15, Patriot’s Day, Sept. 11 and Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7.

However, Memorial Day is different. On Memorial Day, the flag is flown at half staff until noon, at which time it is raised to full staff.

There are no other times that the flag is to fly at half staff, unless ordered by the President of the United States, or a state governor. Contrary to common practice, mayors, police chiefs, city councils, etc. do not have the authority to order the flag lowered to half staff.

If your flag cannot be lowered to half staff ,such as one on a wall mounted pole it is acceptable to attach a wide black ribbon to the top of the staff.
