A little ‘social democracy’ is not a bad thing
To the editor:
Well, we see that the reactionaries are still at it. They stood in the way of FDR’s recovery program from the Great Depression (lengthening it unnecessarily), and they are doing the same today. Those perpetual worthies have vowed to block any piece of progressive or recovery legislation that may come down the pike.
Those vendetta bounders have learned to take in the naive by yelling “socialism” at every turn. None of them seem to realize that the country has had some quasi-socialism for over 70 years, mostly to the good – “promoting the genera welfare,” as the Constitution says. So we already have something of a “social democracy,” de facto, and Constitutionally secular, not theocratic.
In that light it has been said that if our long-tried procedures are not working then modifications are necessary (or imperative) until they do. (Healthcare being a prime example.) Why should 20,000 people die each year for lack of affordable health insurance?
Capitalism is a fine system, as long as it is regulated to preclude excesses and it works; however, when it fails, then a balance has to be instituted to restore success. And yes, that’s a little deep for some folks.
As slow as the wheels of government turn, most of us are properly gratified by the “fast pace” of the hundred days, assuming that the problems of the man in the street will finally be reached. With hard and fast action, the “freedom” that we will likely lose will be the greed and incompetence, which is why we voted in November.
Incidentally, do we really want another “Silent Cal,” or a chief executive who often tells us what he is doing and why? The latter being necessary and refreshing, I’d say.
