Guest opinion: Mother’s Day: Coping with loss

2 min read

“In all the world there is no other who can take the place of my dear Mother”

Many of you may remember this little rhyme from elementary school days as one of the first tributes to a special person. You may have written it in a greeting card you made from construction paper, proudly presenting it to Mother on her special day.

For many, Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate and honor our mothers with expressions of our love. For some of us, it is a time to remember and reflect on the mother who has passed away.

Coping with loss can be difficult, whether it happened recently or years ago. On Mother’s Day and other special occasions, grief and other feelings can return and seem fresh, affecting us emotionally and physically. It’s important to remind ourselves that these emotions are normal.

When we lose our mothers, we are losing someone who can never be replaced; some may even feel that you have lost a part of yourself. Coping, accepting and transitioning requires time and patience.

One way to help ourselves or a friend through the grief process is with thoughtful preparation. Although it is important to reflect and spend some quiet time alone, it is also helpful to take comfort in the companionship and support offered by family and friends.

Mother’s Day can be a time to celebrate the special memories of your mother. Share your favorite stories with those who are close to you. A mother’s love will never be lost as long as they are remembered. Memories live on in our hearts and minds forever.

At Hope Hospice and Community Services, we provide grief support groups for those who have experienced the loss of their mother or other loved ones.
