Water plant is an investment

To the editor:

I think John Sullivan’s letter about the capacity of Cape Coral’s new water treatment plant was off the mark. Rather than complain that the plant is larger than current demand requires, let’s consider the excess capacity as a good investment in our future.

As far as sizing and operating the plant… modern controls will assure that the on-going operational costs will be little, if any, greater than would be realized if the plant were sized for just the existing demand.

The cost incurred (now) to put in larger equipment and piping will seem miniscule when – in the future – we can simply start up another pump or open the valves to a new bank of filters…. as opposed to tearing the place up and replacing pumps, piping and other apparatus in the future.

Imagine how much money we taxpayers would have saved over the past oh-so-many years if the architects of our infrasystems (I’m thinking specifically of the likes of roadways and airports) were bold enough to make them larger than was absolutely necessary at the moment – and large enough to meet some larger, anticipated future demand? Think about that as you spend time in the I-75 traffic some time.

It’s usually so… if you build it, they will come.
