Make sure people are involved in mayoral decision
To the editor:
Mayor Eric Feichthaler’s idea of a strawpoll is not without merit. However it’s the process I would like to have changed.
The Greeks gave us that concept of democracy “demos,” the people. They realized the only form of government you can control is that government closest to you.
They used to all meet together in one place because they could physically do this, like the mayoral applicants for Cape Coral. They did not have this thing we call voting today. They drew lots and the man who drew the appropriate lot got the job. He was given a pretty clear set of instructions of what to do.
One of the early Greek historians relates that in one city-state before they sent the representatives off they took them outside the city and showed them the tree with the hanging rope on it. That did tend to keep representatives on their toes.
