Kudos to the Class of 2020

By Staff | Jul 17, 2020

A much-heralded education celebration joined pom-and-circumstance graduations and other milestones cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But what would have been the 28th annual Excellence in Education event organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral went forward nonetheless last weekend, albeit in a much smaller fashion.

The Chamber invited nine of its 2020 honorees to small, individual ceremonies where they could accept $1,000 scholarships to help them future their educations.

Kudos to those seniors:

* Makenna Diogo, North Fort Myers High School, who plans to attend USF

* Denae Angels, Oasis High School, who plans to attend UF

* Jamie Consolino, North Fort Myers High School, who plans to attend UCF

* Ashley Tabon, North Fort Myers High School, who plans to attend FGCU

* Sarah Gerega, Mariner High School, who plans to attend Nova Southeastern University

* Chloe Evans, North Fort Myers High School, who plans to attend USF

* Eddie McDonald, Ida S. Baker High School, who plans to attend FSU

* Madison Dingerson, Ida S. Baker High School, who plans to attend FSW and then go on to UF

* Breanna Johnson, North Fort Myers High School, Junior Leadership Cynthia Gallagher Memorial Scholarship recipient, who plans to attend UF

Kudos, as well to the Chamber and its Education Committee.

For nearly three decades, the Chamber has recognized not only seniors but, to date, literally hundreds of students and educators in elementary, middle and high school, one each per year, per every school in the School District of Lee County’s West Zone in addition to its scholarship recipients.

Excellence in Education honorees, and their families are typically treated to an awards banquet at Broadway Palm Dinner Theater where they are presented with a plaque and gifts provided by local businesses.

It’s one of the Cape’s largest events of its kind, attended as well by local business leaders and school district and other government officials.

We’ve always been proud to be among those able to take part.

Best wishes to these students, best wishes to those honored by similar organizations including the Cape Coral Mayor’s Scholarship Fund and Rotary, and best wishes to all of the graduating Class of 2020.

Graduation may not be what you hoped for, graduation may not be what you deserved, but graduate you did.

Best wishes as you begin the next step of your journey be it a job, college or a miliary enlistment.

We wish you every success.
