William Ross Proctor

William Ross Proctor, of Sanibel, Florida and Glen Spey, New York died Monday October 6th. He was 94 years old. Mr. Proctor, born in 1920, was the oldest son of William Ross Proctor Sr. and Joy Williams Proctor. He graduated from The Pomfret School in 1939 and was an active member of the New York Squadron A Club. During World War II, He served in England and France as a 1st Lieutenant in the US army for 5 years. After the war he began his illustrious career in Advertising and Marketing in the mail room at General foods soon rising to become marketing director overseeing accounts such as Dow Jones Chemicals, Jell-O and Log Cabin Syrup, (famously suggesting the snow on the roof of the cabin in its design). He went on to create many memorable marketing and promotional campaigns for Lifesavers, Nabisco, Beechnut and Carefree Sugarless Gum after forming his own company WR Proctor Associates. Beginning with “I’m a Beechnut” and Bubble Yum bubble gum blowing contests to State Fairs where one could “Ride Free with Carefree” his work was praised by all for it’s breakthrough creativity. Mr. Proctor also served on the board of Governors for the Westminster Kennel Club in New York and the Pirates Playhouse in Sanibel. His greatest love was for his music. As an avid and accomplished piano player Mr. Proctor in his later years, played weekly at the Lee Memorial Hospital atrium. Mr. Proctor is survived by his wife of 25 years, Mary Jane Keck Proctor, his four children Ross Proctor of Rochester NY, Rich Proctor of Kailua, HI, Kate Brooks of Lawrenceville, NJ and Liz Salguero of Wilton CT and 13 loving grandchildren; Emily Kenning, Will Proctor, David Proctor, Colin Proctor, Hilary Proctor, Caitlin Proctor, Jade Youngren, Peter Brooks, Charlie Brooks, Sarah Delp, Amanda Salguero, Julianna Salguero and Carlos Salguero. A memorial service will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal church on December 6th at 11 am. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Cirlcle of Care, a charity dedicated to children with cancer formed in honor of his grandson. PO Box 32, Wilton, CT 06897
