Stephen J. Megill Jr.

Stephen J. Megill Jr., 85, of Auburndale, Fla., formerly of Cape Coral, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010. He was born January 7, 1925, in Long Branch, N.J., a son of Stephen and Mabel Sculthorpe Megill Sr., now deceased.

He was a retired paid driver/pump operator with the Long Branch Fire Department and was a member and past president of Local 309 Fire Fighters Ass’n., a member of Local 68 FMBA and past president of EAA Fireman’s Chapter. He was a Navy veteran serving honorably in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy serving as a gunner’s mate.

A pilot since 1947, he built and flew five airplanes. He was a member and past president of the 140 Flying Club of Marlboro, N.J., and a past president of the Cape Coral Seahawks. He was also a Masoic Lodge #158 member and a 32nd Degree Mason, Windhurst Lodge of Tampa and Egypt Shrine Temple of Tampa. He was a volunteer for Sun n’ Fun for over 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, Jocelyn, of Auburndale; his children, Stephen J. (LInda) Megill III of Long Branch, N.J., Carl D. Megill of Eatontown, N.J., and Barbara (Paul) Wagner of Cape Coral; his grandchildren, Stephen Megill IV, Paul Wagner Jr., Amanda Wagner-Allard, Deanna Megill and Lorianne Megill; his great-grandchildren, Mitchell Allard, Halet Allard and Emma Megill; a brother, Racine Megill; sister, Helen Megill both of Farmingdale, N.J.; and sister, Miriam Miller of Long Branch, N.J.

Visitation will be held today, Thursday, July 1, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Coral Ridge Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Coral Ridge Cemetery.
