Eileen Mary Thorburn
Eileen Mary Thorburn, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, in Cape Coral, of complications after a sudden illness. She was born in England to her parents, Henry and Kathleen Nichols Green.
She came to Canada in late 1944. The ship which transported her was fleeing from German submariners as World War II came to an end.
She was a licensed hairdresser in England and Canada.
She and her husband, Donald Spencer Thorburn, moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with their daughter in 1953, then to Cape Coral in 1986. She enjoyed boating and playing bridge and was an avid ham radio operator.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Donald Spencer Thorburn; daughter, Carolyn Shuman of Gainesville, Ga., and Bermuda; grandson, Dennis Atkin Jr., and great-grandson, Carter Atkin, both of Seattle, Wash.; niece, Valerie Merritt of England; nephew, Raymond Green of England; niece, Janet of New York; cousin, Richard Wale of England; sister-in-law, Margaret Thorburn; niece, Marion Waldron; nephews, Roy, Cameron and Douglas Thorburn; and great-nieces and great-nephews, all of Ontario, Canada.
A memorial service will be held in November in the chapel at the Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, with the date to be announced. A commemoration also will be held to honor her in August in Port Dover in Ontario, Canada, during the annual Thorburn family reunion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hope Hospice.
