The Rev. James Lloyd Paulson

The Rev. James Lloyd Paulson, of Cape Coral, passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at the Hope Hospice Home after having suffered a stroke. He was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Superior, Wis., the son of the Rev. Carsten and Charlotte (Heydon) Paulson.
He served in the Navy during World War II from 1944-46.
He received his Bachelor of Arts from Northland College in Ashland, Wis., in 1950, and his Master of Divinity from Garrett Biblical Institute in Evanston, Ill., in 1954.
He served as district superintendent of the Aurora District of the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1973-79. In his early years, as a United Methodist minister in Wisconsin, he served at churches in Grand View and Sanborn, Brooklyn and finally at Darlington, Wis.
At The Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church, he was an associate pastor at Court Street UMC in Rockford and had senior pastorates at Wesley UMC in Elgin, Ill., Hazel Crest Community UMC, First UMC in Crystal Lake, Ill., and First UMC in Lombard, Ill.
In retirement he and his wife, Vina, remained active as members of Stoughton UMC in Stoughton, Wis., and Cape Coral First UMC in Cape Coral. He was interim pastor at First Congregational Community Church for two years.
Throughout the last three years he preached each Sunday, during the winter months, at a non-denominational service at Palmetto Palms Community Center in Fort Myers. He maintained his membership and was very active at Cape Coral United Methodist Church.
His favorite pastimes included being with family, reading and discussing theology and philosophy, camping, traveling abroad, watching movies, exercising and dining out.
Surviving him are his son, James C. (Beverly) of Del Mar, Calif., and grandchildren, Lorien, Erik and Evan; son, John P. of Cape Coral; son, Peter L. (Julie) of Mt. Zion, Ill., and grandchildren, Tony (Erin), Debbie Fischer (Andy) and Michael (Rose), along with great-grandson, Gabriel; son, Philip E. of Geneseo, Ill., and grandson, Matthew; brother, Mark (Marilyn) of Wausau, Wis.; sister-in-law, Elaine Paulson of Appleton, Wis.; sister-in-law, Marian Penn of Ashland, Wis.; sister-in-law, Patricia (George) Zipperer of Green Bay, Wis.; brother-in-law, Robert (Gretchen) Penn of Stevens Point, Wis.; stepmother, Ruth Paulson of Stoughton, Wis.; and many, many other close relatives, including nephews, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He loved each one.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 62 years, Vina Violet Penn; parents; and brother, Robert of Stoughton, Wis.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Cape Coral First United Methodist Church.
