Charles O. Wainright Jr.

Charles O. Wainright Jr., 83, of Fort Myers, died Wednesday Aug. 12, 2009. He was born in 1925 in Jacksonville, Fla., to Charles Sr. and Virginia Wainright.

He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served in World War II and Korea. He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts and one Bonze Star.

He also served as a personal body guard to General Patton.

He was a graduate of the University of Florida, where he received his doctorate. He worked for the Lee County School Board for more than 35 years. During his career he served as principal of Edison Park Elementary and Sanibel Elementary.

He was well-known for his secret recipe for smoked mullet.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; sons, Charles Wainright III and Frank Pepper Wainright, both of Fort Myers, and Keith M. Wainright of St. James City; and four grandchildren.

Private family services will be planned.
