Richard Earle Lyons

Richard Earle Lyons, 84, of Cape Coral and Georgetown, Maine, died peacefully Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral. He was born in Arlington, Mass.

He graduated from Arlington High School where he was on the varsity basketball and ice hockey teams. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. At the end of the war, he worked for G.E., testing jet engines, then graduated from Northeastern University and worked for IBM Corp. until his retirement in 1987.

He and his beloved wife, Joyce Sprague Lyons, divided their time between their homes in Cape Coral and Georgetown Island. For several years they traveled the world.

He was a loving, proud and devoted father to Mark (Gerry) Lyons of Hampton, N.H., and Gretchen (Robert) Jones of Brunswick, Maine; doting grandfather to Zachary Jones and fiance, Lisa Ferreira, of Falmouth, Maine, Hannah Jones (Jason) Longley of Listchfield, Maine, Rachel Jones (Kevin) Folan of Woodstock, Conn., and Vanessa Lyons of Hampton, N.Y.; and great-grandfather to Gabriel Robert Longley.

Friends are invited to join in a celebration of his life from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at his home in Cape Coral. Services are planned in Maine at a later date.
