August ‘AJ’ ‘Gus’ Joseph Fischer III

August Joseph Fischer III, 80, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral. He spent the last few months of his life battling with myasthenia gravis, was hospitalized, then spent seven weeks in rehab at Gulf Coast Village. He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Plainfield, N.J.

He was a native of South Bound Brook, N.J, and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1947. After graduation he was employed by Union Carbide Plastics Company in Bound Brook, N.J., in research and development for 36 years.

He was a member of the Manville (N.J.) Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He transferred to Marietta, Ohio, when a division of UC was sold to Gulf Chemicals and spent six years there before retiring in 1983.

He began a second career when he moved to Florida representing Primex Plastics. He re-retired in 1999. He has been a resident of Cape Coral since 1984, when he moved with his new family from Marietta, Ohio.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for many years in Marietta, Ohio, as well as in Cape Coral. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Cape Coral.

He loved life and lived it to the fullest in his 80 years. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, reading, fine dining and being with his family.

He is survived by his wife and companion of 26 years, Christine; son, Dr. Thomas J. (Debra Hovis) Fischer and granddaughters, Kyla and Melissa, of Vermont; daughter, Deidre (Joby) Mays-Starner and grandchildren, Allyson, Jeremy and Hannah Mays, of Cape Coral; niece, Dawn Suvino of New York; nephews, Stephan and TJ Suvino; and many relatives from Ohio, including Linda Caldwell, Sandy Self, Patrick, Michael, Judee and Steve Dickinson and their families, and longtime friend, Jack Primm, and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, August J. Fischer II and Josephine Muchowski Fischer; and sister, Claire Fischer.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. May 30 at First Congregational Church, 312 Santa Barbara Blvd.

Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, the Cape Coral Caring Center or to Hope Hospice.
