Donald Louis Sommerfield
Ret. Lt. Col. USAF Donald Louis Sommerfield, 88, of Cape Coral, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009. He was born May 31, 1920, in Saginaw, Mich., to Louis Carl and Emma Louise (Broederdorf) Sommerfield.
He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a meteorologist and later as the liaison officer for the U.S. Air Force Academy.
He was a member of First Congregational Church UCC of Saginaw, Mich. He was past president of the Gem, Mineral and Fossil Club of SW Florida and a member of the Cape Coral Art League and the Cape Coral Council for Arts and Humanities.
He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 64 years, June Sommerfield; children, Dean Brian (Andrea) Sommerfield, Diane Kristine (Gary) Brown and Mark Edward (Mary Lou) Sommerfield; grandchildren, Cara Perrotta (Brad) Gardner, Eric Hatch, Adam Christopher Sommerfield, Alyson Sommerfield; sister, Dorothy (Jack) Houlihan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Matthew Todd Sommerfield; and granddaughter, Britt Perrotta Sommerfield.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at New Hope Fellowship Baptist Church, 431 Nicholas Parkway. Burial will be held at Roselawn Cemetery in Saginaw, Mich.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the A.L.S. – Lou Gehrig’s Association, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301.
