Anthony “Tony” Thomas

Anthony “Tony” Thomas, 84, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral. He was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

He attended St. Augustine High School and the State University of New York, where he earned a degree in metallurgy.

He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps and served for three years in the South Pacific, where he saw fierce action.

He was a fine man and a friend to all. He found great happiness in helping others, especially playing Santa Claus for all the clients at Special Populations.

He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. For 10 years, he served as the secretary of the Fort Comfort Yacht Club in New York. He also was a loyal member of the St. Andrew Council of Knights of Columbus, where he attained the fourth degree.

The family wishes to express its appreciation to the wonderful, caring staff of Hope Hospice.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eileen; daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Herb) Bartelt; brothers, Leonard and John; and sister, Mary Percifield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Rose Tomai; sister, Emily Salvia; and brothers, the Rev. Francis P. Tomai and Walter Thomas.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Coral Ridge Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Therese Catholic Church in North Fort Myers.
