Richard G. Hiner
Richard G. “Dick” Hiner, 87, of Rushville, Ind., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008. He was born July 21, 1921, in Rushville, Ind., the son of Louis C. and Ruby Isaac Hiner, both deceased.
He was first married to Melba Meyers. He later married Pamela Wolfal on May 12, 1965; she survives.
He was raised in Rushville, Ind., and graduated from Rushville High School in 1939. He attended Ohio Wesleyan College.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Aug. 16, 1945. Rising to the rank of sergeant, he served in the 352nd Repl Company during World War II. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Germany).
He served as editor of the Rushville Republican in the 1950s to 1972. He was awarded a national Award of Journalistic Excellence, receiving the award in Hawaii. He later served as editor of the Cape Coral Breeze in the early 1970s in Cape Coral.
After he retired he worked as a salesman for Webb’s Men’s Apparel in Cape Coral.
He was a member of Main Street Christian Church in Rushville, Ind. He had served as a Rushville city councilman and as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his son, Brady D. (Kathy) Hiner of Shelbyville; daughter, Lauren (Casey) Mull of Raleigh; former son-in-law, Rob Newhouse of Raliegh; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Louie Hiner Jr.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Indiana Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road, Madison, with the Rev. Phil Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison and will include a graveside military service. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Monday at the cemetery chapel.
