Who We Play For to host free heart screening events for student-athletes
Screenings locations at
Who We Play For, a Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to eliminating preventable sudden cardiac death in the young, will host free heart screenings in Lee County, including three schools in Cape Coral.
The organization has been partnering with local communities to provide accessible and affordable heart screenings for all Florida students.
Electrocardiogram heart screenings performed at these events will count toward the screening needed to participate in school sports activities during the 2026-27 school year, as outlined in Florida’s Second Chance Act, which advanced the standard of care for students allowing them to undergo a screening before participating in school sports activities.
Each ECG screening is interpreted by a pediatric cardiologist or cardiologist volunteering to serve on WWPF’s Medical Advisory Team. These national and international level experts are specifically trained on how to read ECG heart screenings for youth based on the International Criteria. Results are returned via email up to 10 business days after the screening. To learn more about the screening process, click here.
Heart screenings are free to all students. Students must be between the ages of 10-25 years old to participate in a heart screening. Those interested can register at whoweplayfor.org/florida-lee. Please note: Registration ends at 7 p.m. the evening before each screening.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading medical cause of deaths among student-athletes, accounting for roughly 75% of all deaths during youth sports. Approximately one in 300 youth has a detectable heart condition that puts them at risk of SCA. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in young people, including competitive athletes, and ECG heart screening is considered a gold standard for detecting HCM at approximately ~95%.
