Break-in at old military museum leads to arrest
A man police described as transient was arrested Sunday in Cape Coral after he allegedly broke into the old military museum building.
Adam Marchi, 34, was charged with burglary of a structure causing damages over $1,000 and criminal mischief greater than $1,000 after police say he broke into the building at 4820 Leonard St.
According to Cape Coral Police Department officials, officers responded to the property on Feb. 5 and saw signs of forced entry and evidence of unauthorized occupation. CCPD officials said a search of the building revealed “significant” damage, including broken doors, clothing, and a “strong” odor of feces and urine.
“Officers also discovered items belonging to Marchi, including an axe, clothing, and paperwork,” CCPD officials stated in a release. “Surveillance footage showed a male resembling Marchi entering the building on multiple occasions.”
CCPD officials said their investigation found that Marchi entered the property and caused damages that include soiling carpets, clogging toilets, and breaking a door. Police said Marchi also admitted to lowering the building’s thermostat and using a camping tent for shelter inside one of the offices.
CCPD states the total estimated damage to the property exceeds $2,000.
As of Wednesday morning, Marchi remained at Lee County Jail. Bond had not been set.
