Third annual ‘Field of Dreams’ game Thursday at Highpoint at Cape Coral

By CJ HADDAD - | Mar 22, 2023

A baseball contest all for the love of the game and to put smiles on faces takes place this Thursday in Cape Coral.

The third annual “Field of Dreams” game goes down at Highpoint at Cape Coral at 6 p.m. — an annual contest put on to bring cheer and enjoyment to residents of the assisted living facility. The game is a joint effort from Highpoint and Cape Coral’s Parks & Recreation Department to bring a fun sporting event to those with limited mobility.

“The kids, coaches and the city of Cape Coral’s Parks & Recreation Athletic Division look forward to this event each year,” said Recreational Specialist with the city’s Parks & Recreation Athletics Division Ryan Robbins.

Parks & Recreation Director Joe Petrella will also throw out the first pitch.

This year’s game will feature a pair of 6-and-under teams from the city of Cape Coral’s Youth Baseball Program, as the Pirates will take on the Giants starting at 6 p.m.

In 2020, a baseball field was built at Highpoint assisted living facility to bring fun sporting events to residents with restricted mobility.

“A few years ago, the Highpoint director and Parks & Rec Athletic Division staff discussed the possibility of bringing residents to the Pelican Baseball Complex for sporting events,” Robbins said. “Due to the unique medical needs of some residents, Highpoint was unable to transport all of them off campus. Highpoint’s director mentioned a field next to the community that may work, so our Athletic Division went to Highpoint’s field and measured. After clearing debris and rocks, weeding and mowing, they were able to lay bases and lines and play ball.”

Robins said the kids who participate each year get really excited for the game and to play for Highpoint residents, and are happy to bring the world of sport in person to those that otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity.

“We’re thrilled to host a fun evening of baseball right on Highpoint’s property to provide entertainment and excitement for those with health and mobility challenges who cannot attend sporting events in person.”

This event is open to the public, but parking is limited. Highpoint at Cape Coral is at 1701 Four Mile Cove Parkway. For more on the facility, call 239-282-4794 or visit highpointcapecoral.com.
