Donalds cancels town hall on Fort Myers Beach

Update:
Congressman Byron Donalds has canceled his in-person Town Hall event on Fort Myers Beach.
“The Congressman offers his sincerest apologies for the inconvenience, and there will be an announcement of a new date in the coming days,” the release issued early this afternoon states.
Original post:
Congressman Byron Donalds, R-19, will host an in-person town hall event at Beach Baptist Church on Fort Myers Beach Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The town hall also will be streamed online off Donalds’ Facebook page.
Donalds represents all of Collier County and most of Lee County, including Cape Coral, in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In a release announcing the town hall, Donalds’ office said that he will give the Southwest Florida community “an update on legislative matters occurring on Capitol Hill. Town Hall attendees will ask questions, share their concerns, and learn of ways legislation on Capitol Hill will impact our coastal community.”
Harrison Fields, a spokesperson for Donalds, said the congressman will make opening remarks followed by a question-and-answer session with constituents.
The Naples Republican is running for re-election this November against Democratic challenger Cindy Banyai, of Fort Myers. Donalds defeated Banyai in 2020 with 61% of the vote. In August, Donalds defeated Republican primary challenger Jim Huff in a landslide with 84% of the vote.
Donalds has continued to defend former President Donald Trump since the former president’s Mar-a-Lago club and residence was subject to a search by the FBI over his alleged possession of confidential and top secret documents.
Women’s March Fort Myers announced it intends to protest outside the town hall event along with the Lee County branch of the National Organization of Women over Donalds’ positions on abortion. Donalds has supported the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
On his website, Donalds has called the Democratic Party the party of “abortion on demand” and accused the party of being in support of “infanticide.”
