A Bishop Verot High School senior was recently awarded the National Merit ADP Henry Taub Memorial Scholarship, which will go towards her studies at Princeton University.

“I advanced from semi-finalist to finalist and then I had he opportunity to get a scholarship from a corporation,” Cape Coral resident Sophia Miller said. “My mom’s work chose me as a scholarship recipient. As of right now I get $2,000 a year to go to the college of my choice. I now have an opportunity to get a big scholarship, kind of the founder’s scholarship, from the same corporation. I am in the running for that.”

The company is called Automatic Data Processing, Inc., which is one of the largest independent computing services in the United States with more than $7 billion in revenue and 500,000 clients. The awards for the Merit Scholarship are funded by the ADP Foundation for children of ADP employees.

“I am going to Princeton University. I plan on majoring in chemical or biological engineering. I am really interested in the chemical engineering path and will see wherever that takes me,” Miller said of wanting to become an engineer. “My nanna is a chemist and my grandpa is an engineer. I have always had a thing for chemistry and have been good at it. It was part of the STEM program at my previous high school, so I have always been into math and science. I knew that engineering is the way I want to go.”

Miller said she chose Princeton because it’s a great school for engineering and anything else she might decide to explore.

“I was recently at the campus for an acceptance student day. I really loved all of the facilities and the teachers and administrators. Everyone seems to be as curious and hungry to learn as me,” she said. “I still have lots of family that lives in New Jersey. I plan on visiting them. I feel excited and ready to be done with senior year. I’m sad to leave my friends and the warm weather, but I am excited for a fresh start.”

Miller moved to Southwest Florida from New Jersey her junior year of high school.

“I feel like I adjusted well last year and took advantage of all the opportunities and have lots of classes and clubs. I got to try out a new sport and meet new friends,” she said.

She is the recording secretary for the Science National Honor Society, which just started this year at Bishop Verot; is part of the Math Society; the National Honors Society; and is a varsity softball player and is a member of varsity girls weightlifting.

As a senior she is currently in two science and math classes. Miller said the end of the year is the hardest as she has all her AP exams in the last two weeks of school.

“I have been studying nonstop. It’s really rewarding and I have enjoyed all of those classes,” she said.

She took her PSAT her sophomore and junior year as it was a requirement of school, which helped her qualify for the Merit Scholarship.

“I got a 1520 on my PSAT. I took SAT prep courses my sophomore year since I was studying for my SAT it helped me a lot with my PSAT,” Miller said.
