The Pilot Club of Fort Myers recently participated in Wreaths Across America, a national event honoring veterans and held on either the second or third Saturday of December with wreaths being laid on every state, Puerto Rico and 24 overseas cemeteries. The event originated in 1992, when wreaths were laid on veterans’ graves at Arlington National Cemetery. The goal of covering Arlington National Cemetery was met in 2014 with the placement of 226,5 25 wreaths.

The goal of covering Arlington National Cemetery was met in 2014 with the placement of 226,5 25 wreaths. Wreaths Across America has a network of over 600,000 volunteers who volunteer to perform the annual placement. The U.S. Congress unanimously voted in 2008 to name the day in December as “Wreaths Across America Day.”

The focus of the Pilot Club of Fort Myers is helping organizations seeking to improve the quality of life for individuals with brain-related disorders through volunteer activities, education and financial support. The club name came from a riverboat pilot who could steer safely through troubled waters.

The Pilot Club of Fort Myers was chartered in 1954 and has been in continuous operation since then. The club’s motto is “Do More, Care More, and Be More.” For information about the Pilot Club, contact the president, Joy Augustine, 239-691-0069, personalpropertyappraiser@yahoo.com.
