‘Dollars for Scholars’ charity golf classic a major Mayor’s Scholarship Fund fundraiser

By CJ HADDAD - | Nov 23, 2021

The community can support the continued educational journey of Cape Coral students with a day out on the links early next month.

The “Dollars for Scholars Annual Golf Classic” takes place Dec. 4 starting at 7:30 a.m. at Coral Oaks Golf Course. The event is one of the largest fundraisers for the Cape Coral Mayor’s Scholarship Fund, a non-profit backed by ever mayor of the city, past and present.

“Community support is crucial in our efforts to award the most scholarships possible, as the entire program is funded by the generosity of donors and sponsors and run by volunteers,” said Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter in a prepared statement. “The program relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses to assist our local students with the tools to be successful and fulfill their dream of attending college, technical or trade school.”

Registration for the golf classic is now open, and players will enjoy course games, lunch, drinks, prizes, and a chance to win a new car if they can sink a hole in one.

This launch of their 2022 scholarship campaign comes with a fresh new look for the logo and website. There also is a new disbursement process for scholarships, as qualifying students are now eligible for a recurring $1,000 scholarship for four years for college-bound students, and two years for students attending technical schools. Each recipient must meet qualifying criteria, including GPA and course load.

Scholarship fund officials added that the rebranding of the logo and website better reflect the scholarship fund’s relationship to the City of Cape Coral, education, and its history, while the new scholarship campaign will provide greater impact for students thanks to an enhanced disbursement plan. The new logo incorporates bright colors comparable those used in the city’s logo, a “wise owl” and stacked school books to depict intelligence, with “Est. 1982” added to the book spine to pay homage to the start and subsequent history of the scholarship fund.

“We’re excited to share our new logo and website just in time for the tournament,” said Joanne Hayden, chair of the mayor’s scholarship fund board, in a release. “What a great opportunity for supporters of the event and the students to enjoy and experience the upgrades first-hand.”

Since 1982, the Cape Coral Mayor’s Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships to Cape Coral high school seniors who demonstrate exemplary scholastic achievement along with meaningful participation in community involvement. The entire program is funded by the generosity of donors and sponsors and run by volunteers.
