A Fort Myers man died Wednesday afternoon after suffering injuries in a morning car/pedestrian accident in front of a house under construction at 406 S.W. 19th St., in Cape Coral.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, Juan Jose Jaime Franco, 35, of Fort Myers, was collecting tools from the back of a white 1997 Ford Expedition at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday when he and his vehicle were struck from behind by a 2017 Nissan Sentra driven by a 26-year-old Cape Coral man. Franco was pinned between the two vehicles upon impact, and suffered life threatening injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died at 4:28 p.m. according to the District 21 Medical Examiner’s office.

The CCPD reported that Franco’s vehicle was properly parked partially on the roadway in front of the house under construction. Franco’s Expedition was parked — front bumper to front bumper — in front of a third vehicle involved in the crash, a green 2003 Ford Expedition.

The Cape police report indicates that the Cape driver of the Nissan Sentra told investigators that he was unable to see due to window condensation combined with the sunrise glare when the accident occurred.

The driver of the Nissan Sentra was uninjured in the crash and the third vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the accident.

The CCPD report says that speed and impairment are not considered factors in the collision and that the investigation is continuing.
