CCPD continues investigation into fatal hit-and-run accident

By CJ HADDAD - | Sep 14, 2021

A 53-year-old man was found deceased in a Cape Coral ditch off of Pine Island Road Friday morning after police said he was hit by a truck while riding his bicycle.

Cape Coral Police Department officers arrived at the 2300 block of Northeast Pine Island Road at 7:33 a.m. to discover a deceased white male “with obvious injuries from a traffic crash.”

CCPD officials stated in a release the man was riding east on Northeast Pine Island Road in the paved shoulder area and struck from the rear, which ejected him off of the south edge of the roadway and into a nearby ditch. Officials said based on evidence collected, they believe the man was hit approximately six hours earlier to their arrival at the scene. Police also believe they have some information on the vehicle involved in the incident, which fled the scene, according to police. A walker in the area located the man and called police that morning.

“While our very skilled Traffic Homicide Investigators are hard at work with forensic evidence that we believe will lead to locating the vehicle and driver responsible for this crash, the public’s help can be critically important,” said CCPD Master Cpl. Philip Mullen in a statement. “We are asking the public to please look out for a dark in color Ford Vehicle with passenger side front end damage. The vehicle will have a broken passenger headlight with possible hood and corner panel damage also. If you see a vehicle matching this description, please call the Cape Coral Police Department at (239) 574-3223 immediately.”

The identity of the man is being withheld because his next-of-kin has not yet being notified or located. CCPD officials said the bicycle the man was riding was a black spray-painted Schwinn that is blue and silver underneath.

This is the 10th traffic fatality in Cape Coral in 2021, not including three medical ruled deaths.

“To the driver of this vehicle: We urge you to turn yourself in out of respect for the victim and his family and for your own benefit in bringing closure to this tragic incident,” Mullen said.

CCPD asks that anyone in the public with information on this case to call or send an anonymous tip at www.capecops.com/tips or https://new.tipsubmit.com/en/create-report/anonymous. Individuals can also send a message through social media platforms or call Crimestoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (case report #21-019534).
