Fifteen fire department units converged at a Cape condo complex shortly before midnight Monday to extinguish a blaze in one of the units.

The fire ignited in the 600 block of Southeast 12th Court at The Courtyards condo complex, where flames were visible to Cape Coral Fire Department responders upon arrival.

Officials reported the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and the local Red Cross has assisted one person impacted by the event.

CCFD officials said the cause was determined to be an electrical strip on the patio.

“The fire ignited an upholstered chair on the patio and extended into the unit and through the roof,” said CCFD spokesperson Andrea Schuch.

Loud booming sounds also were heard shortly after the fire started.

“Oxygen tanks and gasoline cans were stored within feet of the electrical strip, which caused the explosions heard during the fire.”

CCFD deployed Ladders 1, 6, and 7; Engines 2,3,5,8 and 9; Rescues 2,3,4, and 5; Truck 4; and Battalions 1 and 2 to the scene.

Schuch said, “Due to the fire damage to this unit and the roof, and smoke and water damage to other units, the Building Department red-tagged the entire building.”

A firefighter was transported to the hospital for evaluation due to a back injury sustained on scene.

Officials from the American Red Cross Florida Gulf Coast to Heartland Chapter said they would continue to assist those impacted by the blaze.
