The Lee Civic Center will play host to man’s best friend — 1,800 of them — this weekend as The Greater Fort Myers Dog Club presents “The Dog Show Extrava-ganza” sponsored by Powerhouse Dog Supply.

The three-day event, from Fri-day through Sunday, will include things similar to what attendees would see at the Westminster Dog Show, including confirmation, where the judges decide the winners for each breed and Best in Show.

Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event is free, but there will be a $5 charge for parking.

Purebreds and mixed breeds are eligible to compete.

There also will be activities and events for dogs that are relatively new.

Those events will include canine good citizen testing as well as dock diving outdoors, where dogs will compete in extreme dog events in speed, height and distance.

There also will be trick dog testing, obedience, rally (which is how well dogs take commands such as sit, stay, etc…), American Tem-perament, Fastcat and much more.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office and its K-9 unit will be there to give a demo.

Friday will be mostly a fun day, where there will be puppy matches for puppies 4 to 6 months old. There will be the trick dogs and dock diving on that day as well.

“A portion of proceeds will go to three dog rescues, Cape Coral Animal Shelter, Lee Domestic Animal Services, and Gulf Coast Humane Society,” said Liz Barry, a director for the Greater Fort Myers Dog Club. “The event had been in Lakeland for several years and we brought it back to Fort Myers this year.”

“We have more than 1,800 dogs registered already, so it’s going to be pretty big. We’re doing good coming back here. In Lakeland everyone knew what was going on. Coming back here to Fort Myers, we’re still trying to get organized,” Barry said.

Guest pets are not allowed.

The Lee Civic Center is at 11831 Bayshore Road in North Fort Myers. For more information, visit greaterfortmyersdogclub.org.
