Cape Coral’s former Mayor Roger Butler, who served as a police officer before being elected mayor, died Feb. 25, at the age of 85.

Butler was elected in 1993 and 1996, he served as mayor from 1993-2000. Butler also served as a Cape Coral police officer, beginning in 1973. He rose through the ranks and retired as a police captain in 1987.

“The City extends its sympathies to Roger’s family and a heartfelt thanks to Roger for his dedicated service to the Cape Coral community,” a release from the city issued Friday afternoon states. “A celebration of life will be planned by the family. In honor of the former Mayor, the City flag will be flown at half-staff until Monday, March 1.”
