Cape Coral Animal Shelter to hold Rescue Run 5K

By Staff | Feb 19, 2021

On Saturday, March 20, the Cape Coral Animal Shelter will host its first Rescue Run 5K to benefit the animals — and you can bring your dog!

Originally planned for last year, the Rescue Run 5K will finally take place starting at the Cape Coral Animal Shelter and winding through the scenic streets of The Cape. There will be a Pre-run Breakfast at 7 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m. All CDS social distancing protocols will be adhered to for everyone’s safety. Dogs are welcome and must be on a standard leash. (Retractable leashes are not allowed.)

Funds are sorely needed.

“The Cape Coral Animal Shelter could not have faced a bigger challenge in its first year of operation,” shelter officials said in a release issued Friday. “With the onset of the pandemic coinciding with its opening, CCAS had to make some adjustments quickly and efficiently. As a result, 1,000 animals have found their forever homes and hundreds of pets in our community have received low-cost veterinary care in their first eleven months of operation.”

“CCAS brings hope to South Florida’s homeless dogs and cats by understanding their needs and bringing an increased level of awareness to the intolerance of animal abuse in our community,” said Pamela Aubuchon, chairperson of the Rescue Run and CCAS Board Member in the release. “The Rescue Run 2021 5K allows each of us to be part of our mission of making a difference for the animals of our community.”

“Fundraising during the pandemic has been a huge challenge as many of our events have been postponed or cancelled,” said Liz McCauley, executive director of CCAS. “Finding creative ways to host events but still be safe has been difficult. Because we can socially distance and this event is outside, we hope to be able to raise the much-needed funds we need to continue our work while keeping everyone safe. And how much full will it be to bring your dog for some fun and exercise?!”
