Cape Coral mayor, Joe Coviello, died this morning.

The city has issued the following statement:

It is with profound sadness and grief that we confirm that Mayor Joe Coviello passed away unexpectedly today. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Diane, his two sons, Ross and Alex, and the rest of his family.

We ask that you please respect the privacy of his family while they mourn their loss.

Mayor Coviello was elected in November 2017 and was a pillar of the community and served the citizens of Cape Coral with dignity and respect. His passing was due to an unexpected medical incident any further details will be announced as they become available.

The mayor was married and he and his wife, Diane, have two two sons, both graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. In addition to their successful Maritime Careers, their sons serve as US Navy Reserve Officers, according to Mayor Coviello’s bio on the city web site.

He graduated from Franklin & Marshall College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and, in addition to serving as mayor, worked as a business consultant.

City and civic involvement included serving as a member of the city’s Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC); Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and its Executive Board, the Florida League of Mayors and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

He also served as an alternate Member – Southwest Florida League of Cities.

He was a USMMA Service Academy Liaison and Past President US Merchant Marine Academy Florida Parents Association as well as volunteering for Hope Hospice, Human Trafficking Coalition, and Learning for Life.
