Christkindlmarkt Holiday Craft Market returns to German American Social Club this weekend

By MEGHAN BRADBURY - | Dec 3, 2020

An annual event will continue at the German American Social Club for all those who want to get into the Christmas spirit while enjoying some authentic German fare.

Christkindlmarkt Holiday Craft Market event chairman John Wagenhoffer said it was a mad scramble putting the event together after getting clearance for the annual event could go on for 2020.

“My favorite part of the event, I like walking around the vendors and seeing what they have and, of course, (enjoy) a couple of German beers, potato pancakes,” he said.

The annual event will be held from 12 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and again from 12 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at the German American Social Club, 2101 Pine Island Road in Cape Coral. The event is free to attend, with free parking.

Masks and social distancing are requested.

“We have tables that are separated. We are following the Health Department guidelines,” Wagenhoffer said, adding that they want to have fun while being safe. “We are trying to get some normalcy back to everyone’s life. I think people are looking for something new to do.”

The event will feature a variety of vendors with good ranging from jewelry, honey, crafts, Christmas decorations, cookies and ginger bread, giving attendees the chance to start their Christmas shopping.

The outside kitchen will be open cooking up such foods as bratwurst, hot dogs, German pretzels, potato pancakes and apple strudel, which will all be for sale. There will also be mulled wine and German beer available to purchase.

Throughout the event carols will be sung by the club’s Edelweiss Chorus, as well as the brass quintet and a reed quintet playing every hour.

“We have a member that plays the accordion (who will be) playing Christmas songs in between,” he said.

A special visit by Santa Claus will also be made both days, as well as children activities being offered.

Wagenhoffer said the Holiday Craft Market will provide financial assistance for the club.

“We were closed from when it started until September and our bills didn’t stop,” he said. “The biggest hit we took this year because of COVID is we weren’t able to have Oktoberfest and that is our biggest money maker for the year. That is what supports our charitable gifts around town.”

In January, the German American Social Club is planning a Beer Garden Fest, which will feature vendors, German beer and food.
