By Staff | Oct 5, 2020

The Cape Coral Police Department responded to a serious traffic crash at the intersection of Santa Barbara Boulevard and Wilmington Parkway today around 1:30 a.m. Police have reported that one person died after the car he was a passenger in entered a canal and became submerged, and the driver has been charged with DUI manslaughter.

Killed as a result of the crash was Alex Patrick Pratt of Cape Coral.

The CCPD report indicates that Kyran Anthony Montes, 24, of Washougal, Washington, was driving a 2013 Infinity G37 north on Santa Barbara Boulevard, N., at a high rate of speed and drove through the dead end at Wilmington Parkway. As it entered the vacant lot at the end of Santa Barbara, the vehicle swerved to the right and began rotating clockwise. Police indicated that the vehicle continued to travel sideways through the vacant lot until it struck an elevated canal bank, went airborne and flew into the canal.

The vehicle was completely submerged when emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

Police reported that Montes left the scene on foot but was located a short distance away from the crash. He was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Cape police divers located the passenger, Pratt, still inside the submerged vehicle. He was removed from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

After the investigation it was determined by police that alcohol/drugs and speed were both factors in the crash.

Montes has been charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage, fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a traffic crash and driving while license suspended or revoked.
