Man dies in officer-involved shooting

By Staff | Jul 17, 2020

A North Fort Myers man was fatally shot after officials say he pointed a rifle at deputies conducting a well-being check at a local motel.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno held a news conference Thursday afternoon near the Aloha Motel on North Tamiami Trail, where the incident took place.

According to information provided, at about 1:30 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the motel for a well-being check on a white male in his 60s.

As deputies tried to engage the man, he left his room and displayed a rifle then pointed it and started running toward the deputies, Marceno said.

The deputies gave verbal commands but the man continued to charge at them, putting them in fear for their lives and safety.

They fired, hitting the man several times. The deputies then began CPR on the man until EMS arrived to relieve them.

Soon after, the man was pronounced dead, Marceno said.

The LCSO major crimes unit has assumed the investigation and the deputies have been placed on administrative leave, which Marceno said is standard protocol.
