By Staff | Jul 15, 2020

An altercation on the beach behind the Lani Kai Island Resort on Fort Myers Beach after midnight on Wednesday ended in gunfire that left one person dead and two others wounded.

The Fort Myers Beach Fire Department responded at approximately 12:38 a.m. and treated multiple victims, said Executive Assistant Fire Chief of Support Services Ronald Martin.

According to Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, three people were hit by gunfire after an altercation on the beach sand behind the resort where a “group of people were hanging out.” According to Marceno, male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Marceno said Wednesday morning that multiple witnesses have been interviewed and that the suspect was still at large. Marceno said it was unknown how the victims knew the shooter.

“This is an open, active homicide investigation. We’re working some real positive leads,” Marceno said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office remained on the property of the Lani Kai Island Resort reviewing surveillance footage and investigating the perimeter of the property since the shooting, according to Lani Kai Island Resort Marketing Director Melissa Schneider.

Schneider said incident occurred in the “middle of the beach area” behind the hotel. Hotel security responded immediately.

“Everything just happened really fast,” she said.

Schneider said the hotel recently upgraded its surveillance system, which they hope will help lead to the capturing of the suspect. Schneider described the shooting as a “targeted incident.”

None of the hotel’s bars have been open and there was no live music at the time of the shooting. Both restaurants closed at 10 p.m., Schneider said, adding “Nothing was open.”

Schneider said the hotel’s guests were “shaken up” by the shooting. “We’ve helped them through it.”

The beach area behind the resort has been closed off while the investigation continues.
