MIAMI (AP) – The group assigned to independently review the case of a father accused of dousing his adopted son with a toxic chemical is preparing for its first meeting.

The review team, meeting Friday at the Department of Children and Families in Miami, includes Former Florida Department of Law Enforcement assistant commissioner Jim Sewell and former Miami Herald publisher David Lawrence.

Jorge Barahona has pleaded not guilty to the attempted first-degree murder of his son. The boy was found in his father’s truck alongside the road on Feb. 14.

His twin sister’s body was found stuffed in the back.

The department has been criticized for missing warning signs. The Barahonas were the subject of several past abuse allegations, but the children remained in the home.
