49 days of prayer start for Dalai Lama’s nephew
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington says it’s holding 49 days of prayer in memory of the Dalai Lama’s nephew, who was struck and killed during a walk to draw attention for the campaign for freedom in Chinese-controlled Tibet.
The 45-year-old Jigme Norbu was hit Monday by an SUV about 25 miles south of St. Augustine, Fla., during the first day of a 300-mile walk.
Cultural center Director Arjia Rinpoche said Wednesday that the 49-day period of prayer began Tuesday, when the Dalai Lama learned of the accident.
The center says the public is invited to join monks at 3 p.m. daily at the Kumbum Chamtse Ling temple. It says another communal prayer is scheduled this Saturday at 4 p.m.
