Jury finds teen guilty in classmate’s murder
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – A Broward County jury has found a 16-year-old guilty of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of a classmate.
Jurors spent three hours before reaching the guilty verdict Wednesday for Teah Wimberly in the Nov. 2008 slaying of 15-year-old Amanda Collette, a classmate at Dillard High School. Collette was shot once in the back.
Wimberly had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and could face life in prison.
Authorities said Wimberly and Collette were longtime friends who had stopped speaking before Wimberly shot her. She ran to a restaurant, called police and confessed.
The day before the shooting, court documents show Wimberly sliced her arms with a razor blade and warned students she was going to shoot someone and kill herself.
