Officials crack down on counterfeit bills

1 min read

ST PETERSBURG (AP) – Drivers looking for a speedier trip through Florida Turnpike toll booths might want to bring smaller bills for the next few weeks.

Due to a series of counterfeit bills being used, toll booth operators are recording the license plate numbers of drivers who use large denominations, such as $20 bills.

Florida Turnpike spokeswoman Christa Deason says corn starch pens have been used to detect counterfeits in the past but they’re not as reliable. When people know their information is being taken when they use larger bills, she said it discourages people from using counterfeits.
