Man arrested in hit-and-run that injured 2
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Tampa police have charged a 27-year-old man with leaving the scene of an accident that left a 20-year-old film student brain dead and a teenager in critical condition.
Detectives say they arrested Andres Trujillo after tracking the registration of a vehicle that veered over the curb of a Tampa street and struck 20-year-old Erik V. Nicoletti and 19-year-old Cree Alisha Riley.
Trujillo told detectives he dropped a cigarette and went to pick it up and then felt his car hit something. Authorities say they found his car abandoned near a ravine with front end damage.
Authorities say Nicoletti, a University of Tampa student, is brain dead and Riley in critical condition.
Trujillo told reporters he is sorry and that he left the scene because he panicked.
