HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) – An 80-year-old man fell to his death from a drawbridge as it opened over the Intracoastal Waterway in South Florida.

Police said the man, whose name has not been released, somehow got stuck walking across the drawbridge around 3:45 p.m. Sunday.

A witness said she noticed the man dangling from the top and she flagged down a police officer, who rushed in the man’s direction. The man let go and fell about 60 feet onto the concrete bridge. The man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he was pronounced dead.

The drawbridge has crossing arms and lights. It wasn’t immediately if the man walked past them or the bridge operator didn’t see him.
