Officials investigate parental notification
TAMPA (AP) – Hillsborough County School Board members say they will investigate whether a student was questioned about a sexual assault he witnessed aboard a school bus before his parents were notified.
Board chairwoman Carol Kurdell told The Tampa Tribune that policy mandates that parents are called whenever a school resource officer talks to a student.
Middle school parent Lilly Zelaya says that didn’t happen when her son was interviewed by authorities earlier this year. Zelaya says the school should have told her about the investigation. She learned of it when she was contacted by a reporter.
Zelaya’s son told authorities he saw students having sex on the back of the school bus. He attends the same middle school that is the focus of another sexual assault case that has garnered national attention.
