Sentencing hearings begin in Fla. terrorism case
MIAMI (AP) – Three days of sentencing hearings are set to begin in Miami for five men who have been convicted of plotting to destroy Chicago’s Sears Tower and bomb FBI offices.
Federal prosecutors in Miami want the maximum prison sentences for the group. In a court papers filed Monday, prosecutors said a federal judge should reject pleas for leniency.
Earlier this year, the men were convicted of supporting terrorism, conspiring to wage war on the U.S. and other charges. Two previous trials ended in mistrials, and two other men were acquitted. The men denied plotting terror attacks.
The Chicago skyscraper is now called the Willis Tower.
