Electronic toll collection comes to Turnpike

1 min read

MIAMI (AP) – Starting in 2011, drivers on a 47-mile stretch of Florida’s Turnpike won’t have to slow down to pay tolls.

Between the Miami-Dade County line and Florida City, traditional tollbooths will be removed and all drivers will pay their tolls electronically – through either SunPass transponders or a new “Toll-by-Plate” program.

Under the “Toll-by-Plate” program, turnpike equipment captures an image of a license plate and bills the registered owner of the vehicle for the tolls. Customers can wait for the bill to come in the mail or can open a special “Toll-by-Plate” account.

The system will not change for motorists who use SunPass transponders.

Construction on the new toll plaza system will begin this year.
