Child sent home to empty apartment
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) – A central Florida teacher is under investigation after a 5-year-old girl was mistakenly placed on a school bus that drove her to an empty home at an apartment complex.
Officials say 5-year-old Kaylee Mitchell wandered her family’s apartment complex in Lakeland for an hour knocking on doors in search of her mother. She was supposed to be in a YMCA after-school program.
Her kindergarten teacher mistakenly placed her on the bus again earlier this month.
Griffin Elementary School principal Terry Broadnax has apologized for the mistake.
The district’s senior director of elementary education has completed an internal investigation and turned it over to the superintendent.
