TITUSVILLE, Fla. (AP) – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office says it will reopen a 1981 homicide case that previously left a central Florida man imprisoned for 27 years before he was cleared by DNA testing.

In a statement, Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker said testimony during this week’s compensation hearing for former inmate William Dillon convinced authorities to reopen the case. Parker said he has “absolute confidence” in the the agency’s homicide evidence during this investigation.

Dillon was convicted of the 1981 death of James Dvorak. He was released from prison last year. A judge ordered a new trial, but prosecutors then dropped the murder charge that had put Dillon in prison.
