Grandma, 74, arrested in Fla. in Ill. killing
VIRGINIA, Ill. (AP) – A 74-year-old woman is in custody in Florida on charges that accuse her of killing her granddaughter’s estranged husband nearly a year ago in west-central Illinois.
Authorities arrested Shirley Skinner in Pinellas County, Fla., on Monday on a warrant accusing her in the death of 32-year-old Steven Watkins in Cass County, northwest of Springfield.
Investigators there allege that Skinner shot Watkins in the back of the head when he went to pick up his daughter at an Ashland house.
Authorities say Skinner, the granddaughter and Skinner’s great-granddaughter were living in a home in Seminole, Fla.
Skinner was jailed in Florida on $5 million bond, pending an extradition hearing Tuesday.
Skinner’s lawyer, Dan Fultz, says she won’t challenge being returned to Illinois.
