Commissioner McCarty to appear before Senate panel

TALLAHASSEE. (AP) – Florida’s insurance commissioner is headed for what could be a lively meeting with a Senate committee.

Commissioner Kevin McCarty – who has sparred with lawmakers on the state’s insurance regulations – is scheduled to appear Tuesday afternoon before the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee.

Presentations are also expected on the viability of Florida’s Hurricane Catastrophe Fund and the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance in the event a major hurricane, or a series of smaller ones, hit Florida.

One committee member, Republican Sen. Mike Bennett of Bradenton, sought to unseat McCarty earlier this year, calling him “duplicitous and untrustworthy.”
