Trial of man accused of shooting girl to begin
MIAMI (AP) – Opening statements are scheduled to begin in the trial of a man who is accused of fatally shooting a 9-year-old South Florida girl.
Sherdavia Jenkins died in July 2006, after she was hit by a stray bullet while she played outside her Liberty City home. Authorities believe Jenkins was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between 24-year-old Damon Darling and 31-year-old Leroy Larose. Both men said they fired in self defense.
Darling faces a second-degree murder charge. A prosecutor will begin opening statements in his trial Tuesday.
Larose has pleaded guilty and is expected to testify against Darling.
